Exposing the art of crafting carbon fiber for high-end automotive excellence.

When you’re in the business of creating automobiles that command millions of dollars, there’s no room for compromise. Bugatti, a name synonymous with automotive excellence, has long pursued perfection, and this pursuit is exemplified through its extensive use of carbon fiber. Renowned for its lightweight properties and enhanced strength, carbon fiber has become a hallmark of Bugatti’s identity.

Bugatti’s love affair with carbon fiber traces back to the days of the EB110 and has only deepened with each new model. It’s a material celebrated for its capacity to reduce weight by 20-30% compared to aluminum components and a remarkable 50% lighter than their steel counterparts, all while delivering increased strength and rigidity.

What sets Bugatti apart is its unwavering commitment to integrating carbon fiber into not just the monocoque of its cars but also in the very panels themselves. The company goes the extra mile, offering a range of exposed carbon options that demand the highest level of expertise and engineering to meet the brand’s revered ‘Form Follows Performance’ design philosophy.

The remarkable strength of carbon fiber arises from sheets of meticulously overlapping woven fibers, each measuring just a tenth of the width of a strand of human hair. The direction of these strands is of paramount importance, as this is where the material is at its strongest. When carbon fiber is concealed beneath paint, the sheets can be arranged according to engineering needs. However, when exposed carbon fiber is the order of the day, the process becomes infinitely more challenging.

Bugatti currently extends a spectrum of exposed carbon options to its discerning customers. Nine visible tinted carbon fiber colors are at their disposal, and even the protective lacquer can be tinted in one of nine different shades. The results can be truly breathtaking, exemplified by creations like the green carbon fiber Chiron Super Sport unveiled last year. However, reaching the finish line with a car like this is no small feat.

Certain panels, such as the side panels, can take nearly a week to craft, with painstaking attention to detail. The design team’s exacting standards dictate that each weave aligns perfectly at a 45-degree angle. Any deviation, even a single degree, results in the panel’s rejection.

When it comes to exposed carbon fiber, symmetry is paramount. The lines must seamlessly align across the entire vehicle, from panel to panel, yielding congruent, symmetrical lines with flush gaps. Nothing can be amiss, and this is where Bugatti’s uncompromising design team holds the final verdict.

Only when everything aligns precisely is the clearcoat applied by hand. Layer upon layer, it allows for additional coloring, sanding, and polishing, with as many as six layers added based on the desired outcome. The entire process stretches over months, but the end results speak volumes. Bugatti has established itself as a brand that transcends its competitors, and its meticulous approach continues to set records and maintain its reputation for automotive excellence.
